The same giraffe comes at three levels: big patches and thick lines for ages 3 to 5, a grassy scene with a sun and a little tree for ages 6 to 8, and a detailed page with a mane, leg patches and a fuller savanna for ages 9 to 12. Print the A4 or US Letter PDF, or color it on screen first.

Giraffe facts for kids

  • The giraffe is the tallest animal in the world: an adult can be about 5 meters (16 feet) tall.
  • A giraffe has a very long neck, but it has the same number of neck bones as a person: seven.
  • Giraffes eat leaves, especially from acacia trees, and reach the highest ones with a long tongue.
  • Every giraffe has its own pattern of patches.
  • Baby giraffes are called calves, and they can stand up soon after they are born.

How to use this coloring page

  • Ages 3 to 5: start with the first picture. The big patches are easy areas to fill in, and each one can be a different color.
  • Ages 6 to 8: the second picture has a scene. Try coloring the sky and the grass first and the giraffe last.
  • Ages 9 to 12: the third picture has patches even on the legs. A light brown pencil and a dark brown one give a good effect with little work.
  • Printing: choose A4 or Letter, print at 100% (actual size) and use slightly thicker paper if you will use markers or poster paint.
  • At home or in class: it is a good picture for talking about savanna animals and what they eat. Ask each child to invent a different patch pattern.

Pip's idea

Color every patch a different color, like a stained-glass window, and keep the skin between the patches pale yellow so each shape stands out.

Questions and answers

How tall is a giraffe?
An adult giraffe can be about 5 meters (16 feet) tall, which makes it the tallest animal in the world. Its neck alone is nearly 2 meters long, so the drawing fills the page from top to bottom.
Are all giraffe patterns the same?
No. Every giraffe has its own pattern of patches, so you can color them in any size and color you like. There is no wrong way to do it.
