Rhino Coloring Pages

A rhino has thick skin, a heavy body and a horn on its nose, so there is plenty of grey to fill in and a horn to make stand out. Younger children can start with the little level, ages three to five, where the outlines are very thick, the shapes are few and big, and there is no background. Kids from six to eight get thick lines in the kids level, and ages nine to twelve can try the detailed level with finer lines and more areas to color; print any of them, or color on screen first.

Rhino facts for kids

  • Rhinos live in parts of Africa and Asia, in grasslands and forests.
  • A rhino's horn is made of keratin, the same material as human hair and fingernails.
  • Rhinos eat only plants, such as grass, leaves and twigs.
  • A rhino does not see well, but its sense of smell and hearing are good.
  • Rhinos like to roll in mud, which cools their skin and protects it from the sun and from insects.

How to use this coloring page

  • Little level, ages 3 to 5: use chunky markers or crayons for the big grey areas, and let your child choose the color of the horn.
  • Ages 9 to 12: try two greys on the detailed level, a light one and a dark one, to make the thick skin look layered.
  • In class, give each child a page and ask them to find the horn, the ear and the tail before they start coloring.
  • Print at 100% on A4 or Letter. Slightly thicker paper holds up better when children rub in several layers of grey.

Pip's idea

Make the horn shine: color it in pale blue and silver or gold, then cover the grey skin with tiny triangles in shades of grey and purple.

Questions and answers

How many horns does a rhino have?
It depends on the kind of rhino: some have one horn and some have two. Color the horn in grey, cream or any color you like.
What color is a rhino's skin?
Real rhinos are grey or grey-brown, and the mud they roll in can make them look browner. Try mixing a light and a dark grey so the thick skin looks solid.
Which rhino level suits a seven-year-old?
The kids level, with thick lines, is made for ages 6 to 8. If your child loves details, the detailed level for ages 9 to 12 is worth a try with sharp pencils.
