Meerkat Coloring Pages

Meerkats are small, slender animals with a pointed face, dark patches around the eyes and a habit of standing up tall to look around. Little colorers aged three to five get very thick outlines and a few big shapes with no background; ages six to eight get thick lines; and ages nine to twelve get finer lines and more areas to color. Print a page, or color the meerkat on screen first.

Meerkat facts for kids

  • Meerkats live in the dry, open lands of southern Africa.
  • Meerkats live in big family groups and dig underground burrows with their strong claws, where they sleep and hide.
  • Meerkats stand up tall on their back legs to look around for danger, and while the group looks for food, one meerkat often keeps watch.
  • Meerkats eat mostly insects and other small creatures, such as scorpions.
  • The dark patches around a meerkat's eyes work a bit like sunglasses and help cut the glare of the sun.

How to use this coloring page

  • Little level, ages 3 to 5: fat crayons in sandy tan are enough for the fur, and a thick black marker is good for the dark eye patches.
  • Ages 6 to 8: the kids level is a good moment to blend two or three sandy shades, from cream to brown.
  • Ages 9 to 12: the detailed level has finer lines, so sharp pencils help you add a soft, furry texture.
  • A quick classroom warm-up: ask children to stand up tall like a meerkat on watch, then sit down and start coloring.

Pip's idea

Imagine a candy meerkat: color the fur in soft pastel stripes and give the dark patches around the eyes two bright, different colors, like a pair of silly sunglasses.

Questions and answers

What colors do I need to color a meerkat?
Sandy tan and light cream for the fur, and dark brown or black for the patches around the eyes. A few darker brown touches add some depth.
Can I use the meerkat page in a lesson about teamwork?
Yes. Meerkats live in family groups where one member keeps watch while the others look for food, so the page can start a talk about taking turns and helping each other.
