Horse Coloring Pages

This friendly horse stands side-on on four long, slim legs, with a long neck, a long head, small pointed ears, a flowing mane and a long tail that hangs down behind. Children aged 3 to 5 can start with the little page, which shows only the horse in very thick lines. The kids page, for ages 6 to 8, adds grass, a short fence, a sun and a cloud, and the detailed page, for ages 9 to 12, adds hills, a barn, flowers and birds.

  • Horses can sleep standing up.
  • Horses can gallop fast on their long legs.

How to use this coloring page

  • Little level: color the big body first, then use a darker crayon for the mane, the tail and the hooves.
  • Kids level: green grass, a brown fence and a yellow sun turn the page into a sunny field in a few minutes.
  • Detailed level: give the barn a red color and the hills a few shades of green so the horse stands out in front.
  • At school, pair the page with a short talk about what horses eat and what a baby horse is called.
  • Print at 100% on plain paper. Thicker paper helps if you use markers on the mane and tail.

Pip's idea

Make it a magic rainbow horse: color each lock of the mane a different bright color and add stars on the body.

Questions and answers

Can horses really sleep standing up?
Yes. Horses can doze while standing because their legs can lock in place, so they do not fall over. They also lie down for short spells of deeper sleep.
What colors can I use for the mane and tail?
Many horses have a brown coat with a darker mane and tail, and some are black, grey or white. Pick one color for the body and a darker one for the mane, tail and hooves.
Which horse page suits a three-year-old?
The little level, for ages 3 to 5. It shows just the horse with very thick lines and a few big shapes, so the body, neck and legs are easy to fill in.
