Cow Coloring Pages

A dairy cow has a big body with rounded patches, short curved horns, ears that stick out sideways and a long tail with a tuft at the end. Children aged 3 to 5 can begin with the little page, which shows only the cow in very thick lines. The kids page, for ages 6 to 8, puts her in the grass by a fence, and the detailed page, for ages 9 to 12, adds hills, a small barn, flowers and birds.

Cow facts for kids

  • Cows eat grass, and they spend a large part of each day grazing in the field.
  • Cows chew the cud: they bring swallowed grass back up into the mouth and chew it again.
  • Dairy cows give milk, which people use to make butter, cheese and yogurt.
  • A baby cow is called a calf.
  • Cows say moo, and they live together in groups called herds.

How to use this coloring page

  • Little level: color the big body with one light crayon first, then add pink on the udder and the muzzle.
  • Kids level: green grass, a brown fence and a blue sky make a quick farm scene around the cow.
  • Detailed level: give the barn a red color and the hills a few shades of green so the cow stands out in front.
  • At school, pair the page with a farm song and ask the children which foods come from milk.
  • Print at 100% on plain paper. Thicker paper helps if you use markers for the big black patches.

Pip's idea

Turn the patches into shapes from a map or into stars and hearts, and color each one a different bright color for a rainbow cow.

Questions and answers

What sound does a cow make?
A cow says moo. Cows moo to call their calves and to talk to the other cows in the herd, so children can practise a loud moo while they color.
What colors can I use for the patches?
Many dairy cows are white with black patches, and some have brown patches instead. Leave the body white and fill each patch with one dark color.
Which cow page suits a three-year-old?
The little level, for ages 3 to 5. It shows just the cow with very thick lines and a few big shapes, so the body, legs and udder are easy to fill in.
