Wildebeest facts for kids

  • Wildebeest are a kind of antelope, and they live on the grassy plains of Africa.
  • They live in herds and spend much of the day grazing on grass.
  • In the great migration, huge herds of wildebeest walk across the plains together, following the rains to find fresh grass and water.
  • A wildebeest has curved horns, a shaggy beard under its chin and a mane along its neck.
  • A newborn wildebeest calf can stand and walk soon after it is born, so it can follow the herd.

How to use this coloring page

  • Little level: chunky crayons or thick markers are easy to hold. Start with the wide body, then move on to the head.
  • Kids level: most wildebeest are grey-brown with a dark mane, beard and tail. Two or three colors are enough for a natural look.
  • Detailed level: use a sharp pencil on the finer lines, press lightly at first, then add darker strokes to make the beard and mane look shaggy.
  • At home or in class, print several copies and color each wildebeest a little differently, then display them side by side as a herd.
  • Print at actual size (100%). Thicker paper helps if you color the big grey-brown body with markers.

Pip's idea

Give your wildebeest a moonlit coat: color the body in deep blues and purples and leave the horns pale yellow, as if they were glowing.

Questions and answers

What is the wildebeest's great migration?
Every year, huge herds of wildebeest travel across the African plains in search of fresh grass and water. It is a good story to tell before coloring, so children can picture the long walk this animal makes.
What colors should I use for a wildebeest?
Most wildebeest have a grey-brown coat with a dark mane, beard and tail, and dark horns. Grey, brown and black crayons give a natural look, but any colors are welcome too.
Where should a three-year-old start with the wildebeest?
With the little level, made for ages 3 to 5. Its very thick outlines and a few big shapes make it easy to fill the wide body without crossing the lines.
