Serval Coloring Pages

A serval is a slim wild cat from Africa with very big ears, long legs and a golden coat covered in black spots. Its short tail has dark rings, which gives children a fun pattern to color. Ages 3 to 5 can start with the little page, which has very thick outlines, a few big shapes and no background. The kids page, for ages 6 to 8, has thick lines and spots, and the detailed page, for ages 9 to 12, adds more spots and a whole grassland scene.

Serval facts for kids

  • Servals are wild cats that live in the grasslands of Africa.
  • A serval has very big ears that help it hear small animals hiding in tall grass.
  • Servals have long legs, which help them see over the grass.
  • A serval can jump high into the air to pounce on its prey.
  • A serval's coat is golden with black spots, and its short tail has dark rings.

How to use this coloring page

  • Little level: use a big golden crayon for the body and legs, then a darker one for the inside of the ears.
  • Kids level: color the coat golden first and fill the spots with black or dark brown after, so the spots stay crisp.
  • Detailed level: leave the chest and belly creamy white, and press harder on the tail rings than on the spots.
  • In class, ask why a cat that hunts in tall grass might need such big ears, then let children color the ears last.
  • Print at 100% on plain paper. Thicker paper helps if you use markers on the many small spots.

Pip's idea

Make it a night hunt: color the sky deep blue, give the serval silver-grey fur and keep its spots and tail rings black.

Questions and answers

Why does a serval have such big ears?
Its big ears help it hear small animals moving in tall grass, even when it cannot see them. On the page, the ears are two of the largest shapes on the head, so they are easy to color.
Is a serval the same as a cheetah?
No. A serval is a smaller wild cat with bigger ears, longer legs for its size and a much shorter tail. Its coat has solid black spots and a few stripes on the neck.
Which serval page is right for a five-year-old?
The little level, for ages 3 to 5. It has very thick outlines, a few big shapes and no spots or background, so the slim cat body and tall ears are simple to fill in.
