Springbok Coloring Pages

The springbok is a small antelope from the dry plains of southern Africa, with a white face, short ridged horns and a dark stripe along its side between a cinnamon back and a white belly. In these pages it stands calmly and looks back over its shoulder at you. Ages 3 to 5 can begin with the little page of very thick outlines and no background, ages 6 to 8 get the kids page, and ages 9 to 12 can try the detailed savanna scene.

Springbok facts for kids

  • Springboks are antelopes that live in the dry open country of southern Africa.
  • A springbok can leap straight up into the air with stiff legs. This bouncy jump is called pronking.
  • A springbok has a dark band along each side that separates its brown back from its white belly.
  • Both male and female springboks have horns, and the horns are ridged and shaped a little like a lyre.
  • Springboks are fast runners and often live together in herds.

How to use this coloring page

  • Little level: color the back light brown and leave the belly and face white, then use a dark crayon for the stripe on the side.
  • Kids level: three colors are enough here, a cinnamon brown, a dark brown for the side band and black for the horns and the tail tip.
  • Detailed level: a few light strokes along the ridges make the horns look bumpy, and soft shading under the belly adds depth.
  • In class, talk about pronking and let the children jump straight up like a springbok before they start coloring.
  • Print at 100% on plain paper. Thicker paper is better if you plan to use markers on the large brown areas.

Pip's idea

Paint a sunset sky behind the springbok in orange and pink, and give its white face a soft golden glow as if the evening sun is shining on it.

Questions and answers

What is pronking?
Pronking is the springbok's famous jump. It leaps straight up into the air with its legs held stiff and its back arched, and then it often does it again and again.
Where do springboks live?
In the dry, open lands of southern Africa, such as grassy plains and semi-desert, where there is lots of space to run and jump.
Which springbok page is right for a young child?
The little level, made for ages 3 to 5. It has very thick outlines and big shapes, so the body and the side stripe are easy to fill with chunky crayons.
